Drawing from experience is an age-‐old practice for artists of all types. Still, in 2006, I found myself stunned by the realization that my music could forever more be influenced by the confusion, anger and panic that hit me with an unexpected diagnosis: I had advanced breast cancer. My desperation increased when a fire took my house…shockingly on the night I returned from my first chemo treatment. I now had no home, few resources and a long battle ahead.
Perhaps you’ve heard my story before. If you have, then you know I got lucky. My music community rallied. The love and generosity people shared gave me the strength, courage and means to fight—and, ultimately, beat—a terrible disease.
Like I said—I got lucky. So many others don’t. We can change that.
On December 5th, Musicians for the Cure will rock the 20th Annual NW Women Rhythm & Blues Christmas Concert at The Blue Diamond Bar & Grill, 2016 NE Sandy Bv PDX 97232 and
December 9th at Lagunitas Community Room, 237 NE Broadway #300 PDX 97232. I am producing this concert for the twentieth year in a row. I can’t tell you what an honor it is that, yet again, fellow local musicians are gathering to benefit Candlelighters, a Portland-‐area organization near and dear to me as it cares for children with cancer. What’s more, these artists give the audience a night to remember. Great tunes. Great talent. Great hearts. And, we need your help to put it on.
Since our partnership started 20 years ago, our concert has raised approximately $60,000 for Candlelighters families. That amount has helped Candlelighters do the following:
1) Enable as many as 300 family members to attend Candlelighters Annual Family Camp – a camp that brings the whole family from throughout the state for a weekend of making memories and leaving the worries of cancer behind.
2) Help as many as 150 families with emergency financial assistance while battling pediatric cancer – Candlelighters pays for rent/mortgage, car payments, gasoline, groceries so families can focus on what’s most important, caring for their family.
3) Give as many as 3,000 family members a chance to enjoy free, catered meals in the hospital, this helps families build a community of support during the childhood cancer journey.
The attached sponsorship and donation form offer various opportunities to contribute. This year, we’ve broken down the sponsorship packages to ease the burden. We’re also collecting in-‐kind donations and gift baskets/items for a silent auction. With my deepest appreciation, please pick an option that works for you.
Every dollar and item you give positively impacts a brave kid fighting a battle that many of us are all too familiar with. These children may live next door to you, in Hillsboro or down the street in Gresham. Their families fight alongside them, often making dramatic sacrifices to stay afloat.
You can help these mothers, fathers, boys and girls—our neighbors, co-‐workers and friends—make sure medical bills are paid, gas is in the car, food is on the table, the heat is cranked up,
counseling is an option…you name it. Your support may even put a present under the tree.
Above all else, I hope to see you at the show. What better way to celebrate the Christmas season than with a little rhythm, a little blues and a whole ‘lotta soul!
Playing it forward,
